Our Deepest Passion
Of all the things our Lord did fashion
the one which is our deepest passion
is where the Artist signed His Name
and set aside to put His flame.
The place He put so deep within us,
His holy zeal to first begin us
left His zeal and His mark,
in patient love, created dark.
Mistaken for our greatest ill --
the empty place that we must fill.
For all mankind -- the most distressing,
And yet for us -- His greatest blessing:
the Holy Spirit's place to dwell
to save us from eternal hell.
For we have passed from death to life,
and will become His holy wife.
While living now as His betrothed,
He told us that we would be loathed.
The world that sees us so engaged
in jealous pride becomes enraged,
or as men of Sodom, stricken blind,
they still refuse to change their mind.
Yet some remain in desperate search,
whether in or out of church,
to diagnose the empty space,
who need a touch of loving grace --
the presence of the living Word
allowing them to rest assured.
The highest joy and purest laughter
both for now and for hereafter
are indeed one and the same,
and can be found in Jesus' name.
