Alabaster
While sending teams to foreign lands
Jesus sits with His head in His hands.
He is well pleased with our witness abroad,
but our love for each other, it borders on fraud!
For devotion to Him, no trouble is spared,
but when we're together, how little is shared!
"All things in common" the early church had.
But if only material, then truly, how sad!
The things eternal which are unseen,
is what "all things in common" should also mean.
Is our symbolic clasping of hands
the love He expects -- the love He demands?
In washing of feet we all must take turns:
The intimate sharing of deepest concerns.
If mutual sharing, then we will hear it
having a humble obedient spirit.
How we need this mutual cleanse,
not only as servants, but also as friends.
How much will we grow in mutual trust,
before the breath leaves, and we return to the
dust?
Why should we ask if our worship's anointed?
Look at the woman to whom Jesus pointed:
She came with an alabaster jar.
When we gather for worship, how shiny we are!
Worth more than the jar was the ointment inside.
So we are to Jesus when emptied of pride.
We now ask the Spirit "convict us of sin".
Those more forgiven, love deeper within.
